Ward Baking Company Fruit Cake Tin

By Lisa Ostella on June 6, 2024August 11, 2024

Familiar with Ward Baking Company? Yeah you are! Vintage Fruit Cake Tin from Times Tin Cup !

Ward Baking Company was one of the founded companies that brought us Hostess and Wonder.

Ward Baking Company in New York City was founded. In 1921 the company formed United Bakeries. It was renamed Continental Baking in 1925. In 1925 they bought Taggart Baking, the maker of Wonder bread, the largest bakery in the United States.

In 1933, this company introduced Hostess Twinkies. Originally, the Twinkie was created with banana cream filling. But, during #WW2, bananas were rationed. The Twinkies changed from banana to vanilla cream filling.

In the 1500s, the fruit cake was first known as the plumb pottage. This was an English dish that combined boiled beef leg with bread, spices and dried fruit. This dish was mercifully replaced by the far more palatable plum pudding, a fruit cake like mixture of dried fruit, spices and bread.

The plum pudding then morphed into the more standard fruit cake. But, actually became outlawed in continental Europe in the early 18th century for being considered sinful.

The fruit cake earned a reprieve and became extremely popular to be served during Victorian Tea time .

It was the custom in England for unmarried wedding guests to put a slice of the cake, traditionally a dark fruitcake, under their pillow at night so they will dream of the person they will marry.
