Afternoon Tea and the Sandwich

By Lisa Ostella on May 12, 2023May 12, 2023

Plan your Afternoon Tea @ Time’s Tin Cup !

Afternoon tea was introduced in England by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, in the year 1840. The Duchess would become hungry around four o’clock in the afternoon. The evening meal in her household was served fashionably late at eight o’clock, thus leaving a long period of time between lunch and dinner. The Duchess asked that a tray of tea, bread and butter and cake be brought to her room during the late afternoon.

A few years earlier, John Montague, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, had been putting slices of meats between his bread while playing cards. This concept was introduced to the Duchess’s afternoon tea. The idea of the sandwich was embraced and the Duchess began inviting friends. The Afternoon Tea became a daily social event and the sandwich became a sought after food.
