Time’s Tin Cup, Beacon of Diamond Springs Road, #Denville

By iDenville on April 24, 2025April 24, 2025

#Denville was established in 1913. There was no #downtowndenville in 1913, but the Morris County Traction Company trolley service ran from #Wharton, to #Boonton, to #Morristown and stopped in #Denville. Morristown had department stores like RH Muir on South Street which sold just about anything you would want, and you got S&H Green Stamps with each purchase. One of the most popular holiday gifts was dainty handkerchiefs which sold for .25 to $1. Large brimmed hats with feathers were very much in fashion for women. Women wore corsets under their ankle-length dresses. The more expensive corsets ($2-$3) were guaranteed not to rust, break or tear. Men wore suits and hats.

#Denville had 62 registered voters, 58 farms and 275 houses in 1913. Farming was the cornerstone of #Denville ‘s economy thru the 20th century. Farm produce spurred the opening of the Morris Canal through #Denville and connected the markets into Newark. The railroad connection then cut the transportation by days.

Diamond Spring Road and Main Street were narrow dirt roads during this time. It was home to a general store, post office, schoolhouse and church.

Now, #Denville is proud of the transformation to #downtowndenville !
