“Waar het om draait” – “What it spins about” (Dutch idiom)

By Lisa Ostella on March 4, 2021
“This awesome 7-3/4” round wooden display plate is so cute. When the sculptural windmill blades turn in the painting it becomes quite dynamic. It has a lot of texture. The plate depicts a windmill and little house on a stream with the beautiful Birch or Ash trees in the back.”

Windmills enabled farmable land in the Netherlands. They were used to divert water away from swamps and marshes. Windmills were used to maintain more low lying land for farming. Windmills were also a source of milling grains.

In the Netherlands, windmills were used to send messages of grief or joy by attaching and adjusting sails to the blades in certain positions.

The oldest windmill standing today is in the Netherlands and was built in the 15th Century.

19 monumental windmills, built in the 18th century are still standing near Kinderdijk in South Holland. They are protected by UNESCO.
