Poodles, a German breed known as “pudel”; were originally bred as hunting dogs. As excellent swimmers, they were widely used to retrieve duck game from the water.
Now a days, these very smart breeds are used as service dogs, guide dogs and therapy dogs. Especially since these dogs have hair; and not fur. This feature makes them more compatible to people that have allergies.
Elvis Presley was very fond of poodles and would gift them to many girlfriends.
This breed has been popular in the White House as companions to President Nixon and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy.
