Masks have been used throughout history with different values and meanings to civilizations. In Columbia, masks used by the Shamans of Andean tribes represented devils and gods when used for communicating with the afterlife.

In Africa, masks were used as a way to connect with their ancestors, to transform into an animals, or as a way to travel into the past and future.

The Greeks and the Romans were the first society to wear masks for theatrical purposes. The Venice Carnival created the tradition of mask wearing during Mardi Gras to hide ones identity while committing licentious and immoral activities.

In Egypt masks were designed to cover the faces of the deceased in preparation for ones next life.
