Samhain, the Origin of Halloween
Samhain is the origin of today’s Halloween. It was the Celtic New Year, celebrated from October 31 to November 1. It signified the end of summer and the end of the harvest season. It also marks “the dark half of the year.” Celebrants believed that the barriers between the physical world and the spirit world break down during Samhain; which, allowed more interaction between humans and denizens of the Otherworld. This thinning veil of the Otherworld allowed spirits of the dead to visit the living.
Celebrants of the Wiccan belief cast a circle and think of their deceased loved ones. As a part of the ritual, they share stories of their ancestors. Some choose to visit the cemetery to honor their family members.
