Portugal is in the most western part of Europe. They were the world’s first maritime power. Their biggest claim to fame is their explorer, Ferdinand Magellan being the first to sail around the earth.

They are a country with the oldest university in the world. The University of Coimbra was established in 1290. Their university achieved UNESCO World Heritage status in 2013.
Portugal is also the home of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fátima in Ourem. This shrine has the Chapel of the Lausperene where the 1917 Marian Apparitions occurred. A Monument to the Sacred heart of Jesus is contained within.

Portugal also has the world’s oldest bookstore, Bertrand Bookstore in Lisbon’s Chiado district. It was established in 1732.
Portugal is also known as being one of the world’s top surfing spots, world’s largest producer of cork and their port wine.
