When Coca Cola was first invented in 1886 by pharmacist John Pemberton, it contained cocaine as a primary ingredient. At the time, the drug was legal and widely used in “patent medicines” for its perceived health benefits The original formula included an extract of the coca leaf, which naturally contains cocaine. Early versions were estimated to have roughly 9 milligrams of cocaine per glass.

The first advertisement for Coca Cola appeared in The Atlanta journal on May 28, 1886. Since the original recipe contained coca leaf, which naturally contains cocaine; it was marketed as, “Pemberton’s French Wince Coca”.
