Hey Motorheads! The People’s Car

By Lisa Ostella on February 28, 2022November 25, 2024
Vintage Wire Volkswagen Beetle. Perfect gift for motorheads. Ask Laurel to see this piece live on a Facebook broadcast !

In 1945, a car developed from an idea of Adolf Hitler, styled by Austrian designer Erwin Komenda, and innovatively engineered by Ferdinand Porsche, became the best-selling car of all time. The Volkswagen was the ‘People’s Car’ and beloved by all from California surfer dudes, college kids, free lovin’ hippies and desired by fervent Nazis.

Production of the Beetle outpaced Henry Ford’s Model-T when the 15,007,034th car rolled off the line at Wolfsburg in 1972. The very last Beetles were made in Mexico in 2003

Disney’s Herbie The Love Bug was the star of six Hollywood movies.

In 1969, Disneyland held Herbie Day. Hundreds of Volkswagen Beetle owners flocked to Disneyland with decorated bugs and drove their creations down Main Street. Prize for best car was their own Herbie the Love Bug!
