Vintage Mailbox

This vintage mailbox is a welcomed spring addition to anyone’s home!

Did you know children use to travel by mail in the early 1900s?

The U.S. Post Office added parcel post to their services in 1913.  The first child to be mailed via parcel post was an 8 month old baby name James was mailed to his grandparents home in Batavia, Ohio.  A 6 year old girl named Edna was mailed to Christiansburg, VA.

A 5 year old girl named Mary was mailed to her grandparents.  This story was actually made into a children’s book, “Mailing May” by Michael O. Tunnell.  She literally had .53 cents in stamps stuck to her coat.

Thankfully, the practice of mailing children was stopped in 1914.
