The Madonna is the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus, a central figure in Christianity and revered in art.
The word “Madonna” comes from Italian and means “my lady”. Madonna is used for depictions of Mary. She is often depicted with Jesus in artistic renditions. Much of this art can be seen in the ancient Roman catacombs; as well as, paintings by artists like Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael.
The Madonna and Child have a long and rich history of serving as devotional objects and symbols of maternal love and divine grace. These representations have been crafted from various materials, including marble, wood, and porcelain, across different cultures and time periods. The style and execution often reflect the artistic trends and religious sentiments of the era and region in which they were created.
