Sarah Bernhardt earned a place in motion picture history with her early sound film, Le Duel d’Hamlet, and her silent movies, Adrienne Lecouvreur, Camille, and Queen Elizabeth. Historians credit her with leading the way for other stars to appear in films in an era when the movies were considered beneath the dignity of a respectable performer.
