During the nineteenth century, creating quilts was a social event. Many laborious tasks that created the need for many to participate to complete were created into social events. These ‘work parties’ included: apple-paring bees, corn-husking contests, and barn raising parties, and quilting bees.

The quilting bee often times was held in a grange hall or church vestry room and usually consisted of 12 women. Several quilts would be completed in a single session that lasted all day.
