German Craftsman or Meister

In Germany, the master craftsman or Meister, is the highest professional qualification in crafts. Part of the steps to becoming a Meister was completing a journeyman pilgrimage. A journeyman pilgrimage was a 3 year “walk around the world” visiting strangers to complete tasks; such as, fixing roofs, making furniture and tailoring clothes. Before entering the stage of journeyman, the apprenticed craftsman first had to pass an exam. In addition, to qualify for the journeyman pilgrimage, the apprentice had to be unmarried, childless and debt free. These steps to Meister were interrupted when it was banned by the Nazis. The practice has been returning since the Berlin Wall was torn down.
