Harry Belafonte was a key figure in the folk music scene back in the 1950s. He was known for popularizing Caribbean folk songs. He made frequent appearances on television variety programs with hits like “Banana Boat (Day-O)” and became known as the King of Calypso.
The Banana Boat song is traditional calypso music and a Jamaican folk song. It is a call and response to work from the point of view of the dock workers working the night shift and loading bananas onto ships.
