Antique Powdered Face Doll
My affinity for doll collecting started in the early seventies. I was a mere child. But the exact moment and event will live with me favor.
My parents took my sister and I to Disneyland. We went from the carousel, to the teacup ride, to the Dumbo ride, to It’s a Small World. It was the Small World attraction that ended the trip for my sister and launched a forever obsession for my love of dolls.
Over 500 dolls with special effects! The dancing, the singing, the movement! I was in love! Animation was brand new in the early 70s. Disney Imagineers were the very first to create Audio-Animatronics. The first launch of the Audio-Animatronics was in 1963 with their Tiki Room Attraction. So this voyage of dancing and singing dolls was something people have not seen in the early 70s.
As soon as the ride ended, there was no stopping me. I ran right to the front and requeued. I went back on that attraction no less than 5 more times and displayed the worse tantrum my family ever saw when trying to redirect me to something else. My sister’s trip was over. To this day, decades later, she still holds a grudge.
But my doll collection started. I had to have every doll at Small World. I had to have every doll since. Not play dolls. Display dolls. My room grew and grew with my doll displays. And I kept them pristine. It also kept my sister out of my room 🙂
