Michelangelo’s David
King David. Prophet David. David of Bethlehem. Grantee of kingship and wisdom for slaying the Philistine, Goliath. Michelangelo’s David.
Did you know Michelangelo (Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni) was not the only artist to work on the famous sculpture of David?
The statue of David was originally commissioned to Agostino di Duccio in 1464. Agostino often worked with Donatello (Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi) on many projects and Donatello contributed to the work on David. Agostino relinquished his commission of the work on David upon the death of Donatello. The commission was taken over by Antonio Rossellino in 1476. Antonio abandoned the commission of the sculptor of David shortly after and David remained unfinished for 25 years.
