Doonesbury was the continuing series of the cartoon Bull Tales with was published in Yale University’s student newspaper, Yale Daily News. Both Bull Tales and Doonesbury are the creations of Garry Trudeau .
The Doonesbury cartoon even made Broadway. Doonesbury the Musical Comedy opened on Broadway in 1983. Playright now available through Concord Theatricals
Doonesbury characters are all based off of or spoofed from real life and people. Even the Doonesbury name was coined off our Trudeau’s college roommate, referring to him as a good natured dufus. One Doonesbury characters, Duke, was coined after journalist Hunter S. Thompson. The character, Duke, really must have hit a nerve because it caused the Thompson journalist to send an envelope of used toilet paper and death threats to creator Trudeau.
