1790, the concept of an “aerosol” was introduced in France, with self-pressurized carbonated beverages. The modern syphon was created in 1829, when two Frenchmen patented a hollow corkscrew which could be inserted into a soda bottle with a valve which allowed a portion of the contents to be dispensed while maintaining the pressure on the inside of the bottle. This prevented the remaining soda from going flat.
The seltzer bottle obtained its spray nozzle in the early 1800s. It wasn’t long before comedians found a use for a handy water-spraying device and introduced the seltzer bottle as a comedic prop.
