The word Nautilus has been adapted and used to name everything from sea and space craft, laser systems, computer software, gaming systems, excercise equipment, businesses, journals and publications. Even a town in Florida.

The actual origins of Nautilus gets lost and watered down.

Why do so many platforms and entities want to be named after the original Nautilus? Because the origins are of such a marvelous creature! Let’s meet the original Nautilus!

HatTip! NOAA – National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

The original Nautilus is a cephalopod, which is a type of mollusk. This creature has been dated as existing for over 500 million years. Jet engines have been designed based off of this animal’s unique ability of propulsion. They are nature’s true jet engine. The soft-bodied creature lives inside a beautiful exterior shell. The shell itself has many closed interior chambers.

The soft bodied creature lives within the shell’s largest chamber, while the other chambers function like the ballast tanks of a submarine. This is the secret to how the Nautilus moves and propels in the ocean.

A connecting tissue in one canal is called the siphuncle. It connects all of the interior chambers. As seawater pumps through the living chamber, the Nautilus expels water by pulling its body into the chamber; thereby creating jet propulsion to thrust itself forwards, backwards and to turn. While swimming up or down through the water, the nautilus uses its siphuncle to suck fluid in and out of the chambers. This gives the creature control of its movement and buoyancy.
