“The beautiful woman has come” to Time’s Tin Cup

Nefertiti was only 15 years old when she married Amunhotep IV. Amunhotep renamed himself Akhenaten and ruled ancient Egypt as Pharaoh from 1353 to 1336 BC. Pharoh Akenaten and Nefertiti remolded Egypt’s religion around the worship of the sun god Aten and made Amarna the capital of the Egyptian Empire.

Nefertiti’s name means, “the beautiful woman has come.” But after remolding the Egyptian religion to the worship of Aten, she changed her name to, Neferneferuaten. This gave her name the new meaning of “beautiful are the beauties of Aten, a beautiful woman has come.”
