Flying over the Earth to spread the news of victory, a goddess messenger of Samothrace!

A monument that celebrates naval victory. The Winged Victory of Samothrace; also known as the Nike of Samothrace, is theorized to have been celebrating naval victory since the 2nd century BC

Samothrace was known for its Sanctuary of the Great Gods in Ancient Greece. The Great Gods were protectors of sailors and it was believed they would ward off shipwrecks and bring naval victories.

The Winged Victory of Samothrace was also a muse for the Rolls Royce emblem; as well as, the athletic shoe manufacturer, Nike.

On a trip to Paris, he had been impressed by the artistry of the Grecian marble statue of ‘Nike of Samothrace’, Goddess of Victory, sculpted in 190BC and exhibited in the Palais du Louvre since 1883. Standing nine feet (2.75m) tall, she is depicted as a winged deity descending from the heavens, draped in a flowing tunic and mantle.

Although most people associate Nike with sneakers, the brand’s name derives from the Greek goddess of the same name, who represents victory. She is often (ironically) depicted barefoot, as she flies around on wings. And while the company named after her has certainly paid tribute to her winning theme
