Russian Nesting Dolls
The Russian Nesting Dolls were designed to embody the traditional Russian peasant. They were designed in the 19th Century by Russian painter Sergey Vasilyevich Maylyutin.
Sergey Vasilyevich Maylyutin was born September 22, 1859 in Moscow, Capital of the Russian Federation.
The Abramtsevo estate in Moscow served as an artist colony in the late 1800s. It was there Sergey Vasilyevich Maylyutin designed the first Russian nesting dolls. Maylyutin was part of an Arts and Crafts movement in response to the Russian Industrial Revolution.
My introduction to the Russian Nesting Dolls was from Sesame Street. They had an adorable stop motion animation of Russian Nesting Dolls that was designed to teach children to count up to 10. I was fascinated by the dolls.
