M&Ms were created during #WW2 for the U.S. Military. The Military exclusively purchased M&Ms from 1941 until the end of #WW2 . The hard candy shell was designed to prevent the chocolate from melting in hot climates. This made them the perfect portable treat for U.S. Soldiers. The candies became available to the public after 1947.

The ‘Ms’ in M&M stand for Forrest Mars Sr. and Bruce Murrie. They were the partners that developed M&Ms.
