I’m a Twitcher! Are You?

Twitcher is a fun slang word for Birdwatcher. The scientific word is ornithologist. Twitcher is more fun!

Time’s Tin Cup has an entire peppering of bird themed items to satisfy twitchers. Bird patterned tea pots, frames, statues, figurines and more. Even birdhouses to attract populations to your backyard for any that are interested in the hobby of Twitching! Birdwatching actually traces back to the 1800s when conservationists started to watch birds and record them out of concern of the extensive hunting to obtain their feathers for the fashion industry. The collected data helped in influencing laws to protect them.

I have been a twitcher since 1988. I still own and use my same record journal that I have recorded species in. Birdwatching (twitching) is a very popular hobby. We adhere to the code of behavior to not disturb the birds. Birdwatching can be approached just as a curious interest as to what birds frequent your backyard or thoroughly embraced for participation by getting involved with websites, listservs and organizations such as the North American Rare Bird Alert subscription services by the Audubon Society. The twitchers that participate at this level are referred to as citizen scientists. They do provide information that is useful in protecting the species, developments and environments.

Birdwatching can cross over into other interests like gardening, photography, or collecting of bird themed decor.

A fun introduction to birding can be sampled right here in #MorrisCty. We are fortunate to have our own Bird Rehabilitation and Education Center, The Raptor Trust. For three decades The Raptor Trust has provided its unique services to the wild birds and the people who find them, always trying to be helpful and caring to both.
