Father Time

By Lisa Ostella on March 19, 2021
Vintage Antique Long Handle Hay Sickle Scythe Grim Reaper Farm Tool on TimesTinCup.com’s eBay Store

The scythe is usually recognized as the preferred prop of the grim reaper. The sickle is usually recognized as a symbol of communist Russia.

Both the scythe and sickle have been around since the preneolithic times.  Sickles were used for harvesting grass-like crops such as wheat and hay.  Sickles were later replaced with scythes.

Since the Greek God Chronos was a harvest god, he is usually depicted with the scythe.  Chronos literally means time; hence the root of ‘chronology’.  Chronos the harvest god was also known as Father Time.  The image of the Grim Reaper is believed to have been derived from Chronos.  Father Time and the Grim Reaper are usually depicted with a scythe and accompanied by crows.  The imagery infers one being harvested when their time is up.

Time’s Tin Cup may be moving; but you can always send Laurel a message on Facebook and ask to have an item listed on Etsy or eBay! Or, make an appointment to stop by!
