Duty Driven Dalmatian – Inkwell
Did you know that dalmatians have a history of being guards, carriage dogs and the mascot of firefighters?
Dating back to the 1700s, they were the guard dogs of the carriages.
Dalmatians tend to have an affinity to horses. The breed will also follow his master on foot or after a carriage. This breed gravitated to being a carriage guard since carriages were horse drawn. They assumed the position of guarding the horse and equipment on carriages.
Even though carriages evolved to trucks and no longer were pulled by horses, firefighters still embrace the Dalmatians as their brave companions.
“Twenty” was gifted to the FDNY Ladder 20 company as a comfort dog to the firefighters who lost seven members during 9/11.
