African Black Horse

By Lisa Ostella on December 20, 2020January 3, 2021

This seated African Black Horse appears to be a replica of statues placed on the shrine of Shango from the Yoruba empire in West Africa. In the Yoruba religion, Shango was an Orisha, or spirit sent by Olodumare who brought guidance to creatures and humanity. Shango was the god of thunder, justice, virility and fire.

It is stated in legends that Shango road a Black Horse. Horses are powerful figures and were owned by warriors and royalty. Shango’s status was of kingship and he was closely associated with horses in rituals.

The Black Horse was one of many statues that are placed at the shrine of Shango in tribute.
